Performing a titratant requires specific lab equipment to ensure accuracy and safety:

  • Burette – Used to dispense the titrant slowly and precisely

  • Pipette – Used to measure and transfer a fixed volume of analyte

  • Conical Flask (Erlenmeyer Flask) – Where the reaction takes place

  • Clamp Stand and Burette Holder – To hold the burette in place

  • Indicator – A dye that changes color at or near the equivalence point

  • White Tile – Placed under the flask to better observe color changes

Types of Titration

There are several types of titratant depending on the type of reaction involved. Each type serves different analytical purposes:

1. Acid-Base Titration

This is the most common type, used to find the concentration of an acidic or basic solution.

Example: Titrating hydrochloric acid (HCl) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
Indicator: Phenolphthalein or methyl orange

2. Redox Titration

Used when oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions are involved.

Example: Titrating potassium permanganate with iron(II) sulfate
Indicator: Often self-indicating, as KMnO₄ is purple and decolorizes upon reaction

3. Complexometric Titration

Used to determine metal ions in solution using complex-forming agents like EDTA.

Example: Determining calcium or magnesium levels in water
Indicator: Eriochrome Black T

4. Precipitation Titration

Involves a reaction that forms an insoluble precipitate.

Example: Determining chloride content by titrating with silver nitrate
Indicator: Potassium chromate (forming red silver chromate at endpoint)

The Procedure of Performing a Titration

Follow these steps for a successful:

Step 1: Prepare the Solutions

  • Fill the burette with the standard solution (titrant).

  • Use a pipette to transfer a measured volume of the unknown solution (analyte) into the conical flask.

  • Add a few drops of the appropriate indicator to the analyte.

Step 2: Titrate Slowly

  • Place the conical flask on a white tile for better visibility.

  • Slowly release the titrant from the burette into the analyte while swirling the flask continuously.

  • Watch for a color change indicating that the reaction is near completion.

Step 3: Identify the Endpoint

  • As soon as the indicator changes color permanently, stop adding titrant.

  • Record the volume of titrant used from the burette reading.

Step 4: Repeat for Accuracy

  • Perform the titration at least 3 times to ensure consistent results.

  • Take the average of concordant results (those within 0.1 mL) for accuracy.

  • M1\text{M}_1M1​ = molarity of titrant

  • V1\text{V}_1V1​ = volume of titrant

  • M2\text{M}_2M2​ = molarity of analyte (unknown)

  • V2\text{V}_2V2​ = volume of analyte

Rearrange the formula to find the unknown concentration.
