The Mexican earthquake is being studied
It is believed that the magnitude of the catastrophic earthquake in Mexico City, which occurred on September 19, 1985, was 7.8. However, seismologists from the U.S. Geological Survey, including the famous geophysicist D. Harlow, believe that it could reach 8.1.
Shortly before the seismic impact, Mexican and American scientists created a network of twenty seismic stations in Central and Western Mexico (now it is being replenished with nine more), equipped with the latest equipment. The network of stations covers the territory from Acapulco to the Balsas River basin, along which the border between the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacan runs. The northern branch of the network was located near the epicenter of the earthquake, located off the Pacific coast. This allowed the US National Earthquake Information Center (Boulder, Colorado) to determine the coordinates of the epicenter fairly accurately: 18.1° n, 102.3° w.
An important role in the seismic event was played by the so—called Michoacan "window" - an area where there have been no tremors for almost 120 years. (in 1981, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred, but its epicenter was located very deep and therefore it did not cause significant damage). The areas adjacent to the Michoacan "window" were shaken repeatedly, and tension was obviously building up in the same area.
The Michoacan "window" area covers part of the underwater ridge and the Orozco crustal fracture zone. The ridge crossing the Cocos tectonic plate is gradually moving under the coastal part of the North American plate of the earth's crust. The Coconut plate itself is sinking under the Pacific Plate, which forms the bed of most of the Pacific Ocean. All together, this probably creates a tense seismic situation.
The capital of Mexico, with its 18 million people (including the suburbs), is built on a place where there was a lake a few centuries ago. The sedimentary rocks, unconsolidated and moistened, contributed to the intensification of the tremors.
About the book "Our Planet"
"Our Planet" is the name of the third volume of the four-volume encyclopedia "Joy of Knowledge", which is published in English by the publishing house "Mir". The third volume was published in 1985 (the first, Science and the Universe, was published in 1983).
The book contains extensive information about various aspects of the structure and life of our planet. The section "The Structure of the Earth" introduces the reader to the physics and "anatomy" of the Earth, global tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes.
The reader can find the mapping of the Earth's surface on the pages of the "Earth in perspective image" section. The Weather section contains information about the Earth's atmosphere, winds, climate, and weather. The following section is devoted to the seas and oceans, which describes the results of the most important oceanographic research.
The section "Geology" contains data on rocks and sedimentary rocks, rivers, lakes and glaciers, deserts and seashores, and the near and distant past of the Earth.
The "Earth Resources" section covers mineral and energy resources, future energy, and environmental issues.
The book is completed by the sections "Agriculture", "Cereals, vegetables and fruits", "Meat, fish and game", containing a wide variety of information.
The text material of the book is organically connected with the original executed and very visual illustrative material. High-quality photographs, drawings, diagrams, etc. occupy a significant part of each page spread and reveal its theme.
The third volume of the encyclopedia, like the other volumes of this edition, is of interest to everyone. Pin Up onlayn kazino rəsmi saytı https://casino-pinup.com oynamaq.
